From storm to firm offer

Sell at any stage of the hail claim

Hail in southern Alberta does not give much warning.

A summer afternoon turns dark, the storm passes in minutes, and your car comes out of it with dozens of dents across the roof, hood and trunk. What follows is often slower and more frustrating than the storm: adjusters, estimates, body shop waitlists, and a decision about whether the car is even worth fixing.

We buy hail damaged cars, trucks and SUVs in Lethbridge and across southern Alberta, whatever stage your claim is at. Light dimpling, heavy denting, cracked glass, a cash settlement or a salvage write-off, we make a firm offer, collect for free and pay you at pickup.

A costly Alberta weather risk

Alberta's hail problem in numbers

Alberta sees more damaging hail than any other province. The worst storms often hit the Calgary area: a June 2020 storm in northeast Calgary caused about $1.2 billion in insured damage, and the August 2024 storm reached an estimated $3.25 billion, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Southern Alberta towns and farms see their share of summer hail too, and many damaged vehicles from across the region end up being sold rather than repaired.

Repair, settlement or total loss

How insurers handle hail damage

Hail damage is normally covered under comprehensive or all-perils coverage, not collision. If you have that coverage, your claim usually follows one of three paths:

Repair

The adjuster approves repairs and you pay your deductible. Light, shallow dents may be fixed with paintless dent repair (PDR). Heavier damage may require panel replacement and repainting, which costs more and takes longer.

Cash settlement

Your insurer pays you the estimated repair amount and you decide whether to fix the car. Many owners of older vehicles keep the money and drive the dented car, or plan to sell it.

Total loss

If repairs would cost close to or more than the vehicle's value, the insurer declares a total loss and usually takes ownership after paying you out. Depending on the outcome, the vehicle may then carry salvage status in Alberta.

Why estimates climb

What drives the cost of hail repairs

  • Number of dents per panel: the more dents, the more hours of work.
  • Dent size and depth: large, sharp dents are harder to push out.
  • Location: dents on body lines, panel edges and roof rails often cannot be fixed with PDR.
  • Cracked paint: once the paint breaks, panels need body filler and repainting.
  • Aluminum panels: many newer trucks and SUVs use aluminum hoods and bodies, which are harder and costlier to repair.
  • Glass, lights and trim: broken windshields, sunroofs, mirrors and lamps add to the bill.
Looks versus mechanical value

Why selling a hail car privately is so hard

Private buyers see dents and assume the worst. They worry about hidden damage, they know repairs are expensive, and they negotiate hard. Dealers apply heavy deductions for body damage. Yet in most cases, hail leaves the engine, transmission, suspension and interior completely untouched. That gap between how a hail car looks and how it actually runs is where sellers lose money.

We price the whole vehicle: its mechanical condition, its kilometres and its demand as well as the dents. That usually means a better offer than a buyer who only looks at the roof.

Sell without repairing it first

Salvage hail vehicles in Alberta

Under Alberta's rules, a vehicle given salvage status cannot be re-registered until it is repaired and passes a Salvage Vehicle Inspection at a licensed facility. Once it passes, its status becomes rebuilt, permanently. The repair, the inspection and the permanent rebuilt history all reduce what the vehicle is worth to the next owner.

If you own a salvage hail vehicle and do not want to go through that process, we buy it as-is. Bring whatever paperwork you have from your insurer and the registry, and we will explain what is needed.

Compare the complete outcome

Should you keep the settlement or sell?

Many owners take the cash settlement planning to drive the dented car for a few more years. That can work, but there are trade-offs. The dents stay on the vehicle's record, future buyers will knock the value down, and a second hail claim on unrepaired panels may be limited or refused by your insurer.

Some owners find that selling the car soon after settling, and putting both the settlement and our offer toward a replacement, leaves them better off than driving a damaged car until it is worth very little.

Compare the numbers: your settlement amount, our as-is offer, and what you would need to spend on your next vehicle. We are happy to give you an offer to plug into that comparison, with no obligation.

Prepare the details

Before you sell: a short checklist

  • Read your settlement paperwork. Check whether your insurer attached any conditions to keeping or selling the vehicle.
  • Take clear photos of the roof, hood, trunk, each side and any broken glass.
  • Note what still works, including the engine, transmission, air conditioning and electronics.
  • Have your registration and ID ready, plus any lender details if the vehicle is financed.
